Branagh May Direct Marvel’s Thor

Britain’s most popular Shakespearean is looking to add a superhero movie to his resume.

Actor/director Kenneth Branagh is talking to Marvel Studios about directing Thor, according to Variety.

Slated for 2010 release, Thor would be a first for Branagh (pictured, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets). Though he doesn’t have much experience filming special effects-intensive movies, Branagh knows how to stage on-screen carnage, to judge from his bloody film adaptation of Henry V.

Branagh, currently starring on the London stage in the title role of Ivanov, will next appear the Bryan Singer/Tom Cruise Nazi movie Valkyrie.

In related news, Variety reports that Marvel Studios has cut a new deal with Paramount Pictures to snag an extra 2 percent of the gross for its five next movies. Instead of the 10 points handed over to Paramount for distributing Iron Man, Marvel will now only pay out 8 percent of the gross.

Marvel’s clout comes on the heels of this summer’s 4 million worldwide take for Iron Man and Universal-distributed The Incredible Hulk. Still to come: Iron Man 2 (currently scheduled for May 7, 2010), The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011) and The Avengers (July 15, 2011).

Revision3 Pilot Program Searches for Next Internet Hits

October 1st, 2008 by n4

What if the next big internet show already exists, and just needs a little boost to find its legion of fans?

That's the scenario Martin Sargent, director of acquisitions at Revision3, is betting on for the online media company's latest venture: Revision3 Beta.

The new web venture is a virtual studio to test-drive shows before they hit Revision3's main site.

"The new media landscape is getting more and more crowded," said Sargent, who hosts Revision3's hit web show, Internet Superstar. "As it gets easier to make these shows, it gets harder to corral audiences."

As more digital media studios experiment with new content, the trick isn't always coming up with viable ideas — it's connecting solid shows with a sizable audience.

Revision3's game plan might sound like just another web venture
offshoot, but the project
makes sense: It's a low-cost and low-risk way for Revision3 to expand
its line of programming while offering up-and-coming creators a
platform that isn't overrun with music videos and amateur clips.

Revision3 kicked off the project with seven original ideas submitted
by budding video producers, and gave the directors tools to take their
series to the next level.

Revision3 Beta's lineup includes HackCollege, a lifehacking show aimed at the university set; Your Weekly Music Lesson With Walt by Walt Ribeiro (aka "the internet's music teacher"); and Bottles, Brews and Blends, a drink review show (embedded).

"We were getting a staggering number of e-mails from people with
show ideas," said Sargent. "And while they weren't quite ready for our
main site, they were good enough for promotion."

Sargent sifted through the submissions and hand-picked several
candidates, then supplied each team with seed money to cover production
costs, studio time with green screens, tech advisers and equipment. The
show producers also get a portion of ad revenue earned by Revision3 Beta.

The media site, which is already home to Epic Fu, Wine Library TV and Kevin Rose's Diggnation, tallied 6.5 million pageviews in August, according to Sargent.

Not all of the beta shows are guaranteed to graduate to the big leagues.

"Ideally, every one one of these shows will become a successful
moneymaker for us," said Sargent. "But just like regular TV
pilots, not everyone will make it."

Still, he says, he's accepting submissions and will continue to introduce new players into the Beta lineup.

And submissions aren't restricted to technology or educational shows. "There's no limit on what we would accept — animated, scripted entertainment — as long as we can make it work on the budget," Sargent said.

Is ANYONE Buying This?

October 1st, 2008 by n4

We all know the leanings I share with the majority of commenters on this blog.

But is ANYONE actually buying the spin that the Republicans voted down the bailout becaause Nancy Pelosi blamed Bush for the state we are in when she gave a pre-vote speech today?

Is ANYONE buying John McCain trying to blame Obama for the Republicans not voting for the bailout?

I mean… really?

Hot Button - Scottgar Rudgen & Nikkie McFinkey

October 1st, 2008 by n4

I don’t know if it’s 42 West or Rudin’s office itself that is publishing its list of grievances in the guise of Nikki “reporting” the story (aka “opening her e-mail”), but when Nikki is “in possession of plaintive emails from Daldry, and angry letters from entertainment law pitbulls,” you know that she is passing along something that someone else is selling.

==============

Take a look at Nikki’s thing.

I’ll offer a couple of notes here…

1) “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s delivery date of November 7th” doesn’t exist. Movies are screened for the HFPA well after November 7 every year. I think she is referring to the joke known as The NBR.

2) Nikki parroting the dismissal that “Hollywood trades were also suckered by Weinstein’s other spin that Rudin… didn’t want his actors or his pictures competing against themselves. But that’s a ridiculous argument,” is, in fact, ridiculous.

This is spin from the Rudin camp, which would like people to believe that they are not concerned that The Reader will pull focus from Revolutionary Road. However, it is 100% true that they are ALL worried that The Reader will pull focus from Rev Road. That has been the story for months now. It does not mean that Rudin or anyone else thinks that The Reader itself is a behemoth that will crush Rev Road’s chances. But it muddies the water… and not just the public view of it.

First, let’s just look at the calendar. Scott Rudin seems to have at least 2 “Oscar movies” every year. But he doesn’t let his BP candidates release on top of one another. Last year, it was No Country For Old Men in early November and There Will Be Blood at Christmas. Second tier chasers The Darjeeling Limited and Margot at the Wedding were, respectively, launched in September and dumped (never more than 80 screens) in November. The year before, it was The Queen vs Notes on a Scandal… September and December.

No one wants to fight themselves head on, at the box office or in awards season. Had the plan been to release The Reader in December, Rudin would have surely pushed to have Sam Mendes - who is only still adjusting Rev Road because he started shooting This Must Be The Place in April, a date by which he had expected to be finished on Rev Road – to have Rev Road ready for an October release. It’s not exactly brain surgery. The only self-competing experience that comes close to this for Rudin was The Royal Tenenbaums and Iris, opening on the same day in 2001… but Royal went wider quickly and Iris was really a qualifying run, not cracking 40 screens until March of 2002.

The other Rev Road/Reader release problem is that it represents, from the day Rudin & Weinstein teamed, a combination of behind the scenes marketing and publicity talent that is conflicted, both in terms of the immediate issue of release, as well as the long relationships in town. Rudin’s point people are at 42 West, a company driven greatly by people who used to work for Harvey… and who carry the scars of that history. They did a lot of great things together. But the end was bitter. Moreover, Harvey’s ongoing team is spread around town, as he didn’t have a lot to push this season, so they have other obligations, some exclusively. On top of that is the Kate Winslet problem.

Doubt really is on a different track altogether. Miramax’s relationship and enormous awards success working with 42 West is every bit as well established as the relationship with Rudin, who also produced this movie. There is a built-in conflict there. But unlike the Paramount Vantage situation, there is a lot less cross-over between the film’s teams.

The Rest…

Piolo Pascual Reacts About "Manila" Controversy

October 1st, 2008 by n4
Although screenwriters Ricky Lee and Pete Lacaba air their disappointment about the independent film “Manila” and its directors Adolf Alix Jr. and Raya Martin, Piolo Pascual is still thrilled about his first-produced film despite controversy.

Piolo has been very open in saying that Manila is “inspired” by Ishmael Bernal’s 1980 movie Manila By Night and Lino Brocka’s 1979 masterpiece Jaguar (slang for guwardiya or security guard).

Manila By Night was written and directed by the late Ishmael Bernal, with input from Ricky Lee and other screenwriters. Jaguar, on the other hand, is credited to both Ricky Lee and Pete Lacaba.

Piolo is still positive that the issue about his indie movie would be settled soon. “Tapos na kameng mag-shoot and nasa post-production na, I’m gonna see the rough cut tonight. I hope they’ll be able to iron things out with Mr. Ricky Lee and Mr. Pete Lacaba.”

When asked for his comment about it, Piolo was honest enough to say, “I’d rather not comment about it because I only found out about it yesterday. So, I haven’t really discussed it with my director. I’m meeting up with him tonight, si Direk Adolf Alix Jr. But I’m praying na maayos naman.”

In the end, he is still positive about Manila. “I’m also excited about the project, it’s the first time I produce. I hope it turns out well.”

Piolo will be portraying two roles in the movie: William, a drug addict who is trying to restore his self-worth by reestablishing his relationship with the people around him; and Philip, a bodyguard employed to look over a mayor’s son, only to be disillusioned in the end after a series of unfortunate events lead him to discover the underworld.

Sam Milby Nervous About His Rockoustic Heartthrob Concert

October 1st, 2008 by n4
dcdc1_Sam Sam Milby Nervous About His Rockoustic Heartthrob ConcertBarely a month before his first major solo concert, Sam Milby admits that he is excited and nervous at the same time.

The 24-year-old singer-actor blamed his fear of performing solo in front of the public for feeling “extremely nervous” about his The Rockoustic Heartthrob concert on October 25 at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City.

Kasi ako ‘yong type na may stage fright,” Sam told the press in an interview during the launching og Star Magic’s 2009 Catalogue yesterday, September 28, at the lobby of EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.

Sam added that he’s not used to having a performing solo on stage. In fact, his past major concerts were with fellow “heartthrob” Piolo Pascual.

Despite this, Sam still tries not to feel uneasy by thinking about the songs that he will be performing during the concert.

Excited naman ako kasi maganda ‘yong line-up ng songs, so nag-aaral ako. May mga rock songs, mga songs na galing childhood ko, parang ganyan. May mga acoustic, may mga rock.

So, has Sam started rehearsing for the big concert?

Wala pa!” exclaimed Sam. “Wala pa nga, e, kasi wala pa akong time kasi ‘yong Dyosa, at saka tinapos ko na ‘yong indie film ko na Cul de Sac. Sobrang busy ako sa indie film at saka Dyosa at saka may iba-ibang raket din.

Sam knows the he only has less than three weeks to prepare for his first solo concert. This may be the reason he blurted out during the interview, “Sana mag-start na ‘yong rehearsals kasi kailangan ko ng maraming-maraming rehearsal.

Sam also admitted that he never imagined himself performing in such concert event when he was still starting out in show business.

Feeling ko hindi ko kaya. Feeling ko, hindi pa ako handa,” said Sam. “Pero ngayon, I need to get used to it kasi stage fright talaga ako. So, kailangan kong masanay na nasa harap ako ng tao.”

Star Magic Launches 2009 Catalogue with an All-white Affair

October 1st, 2008 by n4
Star Magic Launches 2009 Catalogue with an All-white AffairIt was an all-white affair for the launch of Star Magic Catalogue 2009.

Ang next 22 main stars ayon sa pagkakasunod ay sina Bea Alonzo (”Stunning Swan”), John Lloyd Cruz (”The Actor’s Actor”), Kristine Hermosa (”The Reluctant Star”), Diether Ocampo (”The Activist”), Rica Peralejo (”Educating Rica”), Sam Milby (”Certified A-Lister”), Kim Chiu (”Everybody’s Princess”), Gerald Anderson (”Boy Wonder”), Roxanne Guinoo (”Child Woman”), Jake Cuenca (”The Good Bad Boy”), Angelica Panganiban (”The Real Deal”), Zanjoe Marudo (”Man of the Moment”), Shaina Magdayao (”The Sweetheart”), Jon Avila (”Heroic Hunk”), Rafael Rosell (”Independent Spirit”), Maja Salvador (”Rising Thespian”), Jay-R Siaboc (”Wild Card”), Yeng Constantino (”Music Heartthrob”), Erich Gonzales (”The Good Girl”), Nikki Gil (”The Natural”), Pokwang (”Funny Lady”), at Vina Morales (”The Dynamo”).

Kris Aquino Reveals How She Consumed Her Endorsement Fees

October 1st, 2008 by n4
Kris Aquino Reveals How She Consumed Her Endorsement FeesIf you happen to read my previous article or probably bought a copy of Yes! Magazine October issue, you for sure are aware by now that Kris Aquino topped their list of Top 20 Celebrity Endorsers for 2008. And maybe, like me, is curious how she spent some, if not all, of her talent fees from her endorsements?

Kris, on her text messages to Jo-Ann Maglipon, Yes! Editor-in-Chief, mentioned where the big portion of her talent fees from her endorsements actually go.

The bulk of my advertising this year went to Baby James’s educational fund (pre-paid lump sum from Grade 1 to 4th year college), his wealth-managed trust fund which we’ll receive after college graduation and Josh’s wealth-managed fund as well,” said Kris.

Josh will always need special care,” Kris continued, “so I promised my mom [former President Corazon Aquino] to make sure that he’ll always be ok financially. He is always her top worry.”

The former Philippine president was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year and Kris told Ms. Maglipon that she also helps in the medical expenses.

I take care of some of my mom’s medical expenses because it makes me feel good but she’s forever wanting to pay me back,” she said.

Although Kris did not mention exactly where the money came from, she said that, “James has fulfilled his promise to his family to build a bigger home in their province.

Thank you for this recognition,” she told Ms. Maglipon.

Kris emerged on top of the YES! list because she is “without a doubt the queen of product endorsements, with 21 products to her name.”

According to YES!, Kris is a favorite of advertisers because “she is very easy to work with, and is very professional, arriving for a shoot prepared, with her lines memorized.”

But Kris’s best asset is that “she connects well with consumers, whatever bracket of society they belong to.
